Key Developments

In some instances, the implementation of new "Gas Systems" undertaken by the SBM Gas Business Unit requires specific components of new technologies. The SBM R&D division is actively involved in the following developments, working hand-in-hand with the Gas Business Unit.

Cryogenic Swivels

SBM R&D involvement in the development of cryogenic swivels started in 1988 when the EMH cryogenic in-line swivel prototype, lab facilities and related patents were transferred to SBM as part of the acquisition process of that company.

Today, the original in-line swivel design has been optimized and further tested in SBM R&D laboratory with LN2 and in an outside laboratory with LNG. A LNG toroidal cryogenic swivel is also under development and will be ready by the end of 2005.

Cryogenic Pipeline

SBM R&D is currently taking an active part in the final qualification of a cryogenic subsea pipeline, working in close cooperation with the company that is today the most advanced in these developments. This qualification program will be completed by middle 2004 and will be endorsed by the three oil majors most involved in new LNG projects.

Flexible Cryogenic Hoses

SBM R&D is actively following the development of cryogenic flexible hoses in order to ensure that the final products will eventually be suitable for their integration in the systems developed by the Gas Business Unit.
